Norma’s Corner Shoppe – Queens, NY

Based on appearances alone, Norma’s isn’t the kind of place that demands a second glance. Inside, you’ll find a rotating collection of pastries, a purple espresso machine, and an old wooden ceiling fan. Outdoor seating consists of just three tables on the street. And yet, at any time of day, there’s a constant stream of people moving in and out, guided only by a sign that reads:

“During peak hours sandwiches may take 20 to 25 minutes. Our hearts are big but our kitchen is small. Thank you for your patience. Love, Norma’s.”

That note does a better job of capturing the spirit of Norma’s than anything else could. Slow-moving yet deliberate, calm yet kind. Walking in feels like stepping into a neighborhood diner—built for the people of Ridgewood, by the people of Ridgewood. It doesn’t get more local than this.

So what can nine dollars get you? These days, it often feels like just a coffee. At Norma’s, nine dollars gets you a freshly made biscuit breakfast sandwich—and not just any sandwich, but a true contender for the best. The biscuit is seasoned with scallions and cheese, baked fresh (hence the wait), then stuffed with scrambled eggs, melted cheese, and spicy bacon (trust me—get the spicy version). Simple, affordable, and made with slow care that can’t be replicated. Sit outside, watch the world pass by, and enjoy a sandwich from Norma’s heart to yours.

Best Bite: The New Yorker with spicy bacon was my favorite of the bunch.
